English Reflective Journal Week 2

27 February 2009
4.47PM

The next article I read in a magazine issued two years aao, was mainly about the scientific meaning to global warming, the effects of global warming and how it is going to affect the earth in the future.

Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of the Earth's near-surface air and the oceans since the mid-twentieth century and its projected continuation. Global surface temperature increased during the 100 years ending in 2005. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change concludes that anthropogenic greenhouse gases are responsible for most of the observed temperature increase since the middle of the twentieth century, and natural phenomena such as solar variation and volcanoes probably had a small warming effect from pre-industrial times to 1950 and a small cooling effect from 1950 onwards. I think, as we learn more detailed news about the global warming, we actually realise that small things such as volcanoes had small warming effect in the early century.

The expected long range effects of recent climate change may already be observed. Rising sea levels, glacier retreat, Arctic shrinkage, and altered patterns of agriculture are cited as direct consequences of human activities. Predictions for secondary and regional effects include extreme weather events, an expansion of tropical diseases, changes in the timing of seasonal patterns in ecosystems, and drastic economic impact.

As I was reading this article, I was a bit shocked at certain points. It was a bit threatening, especially when I was reading about the information about the effects of global warming.

English Reflective Journal Week 1

19 FEBRUARY 2009
2.35PM

I was browsing through the internet and I found this article. It was entitled as “global warming”, so I thought it would be relevant to my task. This article was mainly about global warming and how did it came about.

"As we know global warming has been taking place on earth for the past few years. But infect scientists discovered the greenhouse effect in the late 19th century. But it wasn’t accepted as a scientifically proven fact until 1992 when the United Nations held a Conference on Environment and Development". I think, if only they had not wasted much time trying to prove that global warming was taking place, they could have found a possible solution to prevent global warming or could have even stop global warming if possible.

"Since global warming has been proven to be happening, scientist started doing their research on global warming. Mainly on what is global warming, how is it going to affect our earth and so on. As we know, developing nations to industrial countries, global climate affects everyone, so many other newspaper articles tell us the story of nature's dramatic impact on history".

Personally, I think many things can be concluded from this article. Global warming had started long before humans found out. That means the activities that the people before and in the 19 century were engaged in was quite harmful to the earth.

Total defence/Cross country...

On 13 February 2009 we celebrated total defence day cum cross country in chong boon secondary. Its quite a routine for us that we have our cross country together as total defence day. So, it was quite a preparation for the both celebration. We actually had our cross country at ngee ann polytechnic. Well, it was a huge place. They even had their own big stadium and that was where we ran. The girls had to run 2.8 kilometers while the boys had to run about 3.2 kilometers.

firstly, the lower secondary had to run first. After that it was the upper secondary's turn. It was quite tiring, but i managed to finish the run without any problem. Some of my friends could really run fast. It was amazing. How i wish i could run as fast as them. Even then i ran without any worry.

After the running, our principal Mrs Menon gave us a speech for both corss speech and total defence day. Right after that there was prize presentation for those who participated in the cross country race. Then we had our total defence day activites. Soon, the celebration was over. when it ended it was already around 6pm. My friends and i headed home.I definitely had a great time.

Virtual Trip to Chek Jawa

Date: 12 January 2009
Time: 11.30am

We had to select a perfect location that could help us with our project on animal and plant conservation. Indeed, we needed a place that provides us with a fascinating array of animals and plants from different habitat and of different adaptations.

We then viewed a virtual tour of Chek Jawa has provided magnificent sites of Chek Jawa. Chek Jawa is located at Pulau Ubin, Singapore. According to our expectations, Chek Jawa showcases rare creatures and plants that are worth knowing about. Some animals and plants have left different impact on us. Here is some information on the animals and plants that has amazed us.

Our first destination was mangrove swamp. We came across many different mangrove animals. One of the wondrous animals that we spotted was the Porcelain Fiddler Crab. This is an outstanding animal because of its vibrant colours, unlike common crabs. Its tiny body, which has a width of 1.5 – 2 cm, is coated with shiny black that has white dotted stripes. It also has a striking orange pincers that attracts our attention the most.

The next creature that amazed us was the sea slug. This creature was not very attractive or might we say it was spotless. But, one of us somehow came across this creature. What actually amazed us was the way its body system works. The sea slug’s gills are modified for breathing air. Infect, they are hermaphrodites with complicated reproductive organs to ensure cross- but not self-fertilisation. Sea slugs actually come in different colours and sizes. There are some which are so colourful that it might seem to you like a plasticy-looking toy. But the common ones that were found in the rocky shore of Chek Jawa was the blackish coloured slug. One reason this amazing creature is rarely seen is because of its colour.

Our final destination was the coastal forest of chek jawa. There, they had a canopy of trees, plants and a few wild creatures. Almost everything there was so vibrantly coloured. But, only one had caught our eye. This plant actually looked like a pinkish coloured dangling lamp. It was just unbelievable. We were so excited upon looking at the plant so intensively. We just wished we could have plucked the fruit of the plant. It was definitely very eyed catching.

From this trip to Chek Jawa, we both think that we have really learnt beyond our classrooms and daily lives. We think that this tour has not only provided us with information of different plants and animals but also an outdoor experience.
